Healing the soul, Yuseong Hot Spring(유성온천) - A unique experience in Daejeon

Yuseong District has a variety of exclusive experiences and the public Foot spa is one that you should definitely not miss

Foot massage and foot spa were invented very long ago as methods to remedy sadness and stimulate relaxation. In Daejeon, South Korea, Yuseong Hot Spring provides a public foot bath that is accessible and free to everyone throughout the year.

Yuseong Hot Springs has long been associated with cranes. During the final days of Baekje Kingdom, a man who was the only son and heir of a family for seven generations was seriously wounded during a war with Silla. His mother worried greatly over her son’s wounds. One day she saw a crane with a wounded wing dip itself into a hot spring in the midst of snow-covered ground and healed. She took her son there and his wound was healed as well so the legend goes. Perhaps because of this legend, the Yuseong Hot Springs is famous for its incredible healing properties.

Yuseong Hot Springs is located at the center of Daejeon. The hot spring is known to be effective in countering many kinds of maladies. The water here contains alkaline minerals such as calcium, and potassium, sulphur, carbonic acid, silicic acid and radium. An especially high concentration of radium is found here. Such alkaline hot springs are known to be good for treating neuralgia and geriatric diseases. Nearby are large accommodations with many convenient facilities, which make it easy to visit here while touring. Visitors can enjoy the pleasant foot spa and then accommodate themselves in rest areas or try some local cuisine.

The cold of winter is coming soon. Give Yuseong Hot Spring Foot Bath a visit and experience the warmth and pleasure of foot spa yourself. This is a great occasion to creat a memorable moment with you families and loved ones.

“Revitalizing Yuseong Hot Springs: A New Era for a Beloved Destination”

Yuseong District Mayor Jeong Yong-rae has initiated a project to revitalize the Yuseong Hot Spring District, which was a popular honeymoon destination in the 1980s but declined due to aging facilities and the proliferation of entertainment establishments.

The Yuseong District Office has secured national funding and is investing 26 billion KRW in the Hot Spring Cultural Park. The project includes creating performance venues and therapy experience spaces, and expanding the annual May Hot Spring Festival to a year-round event. This effort aims to revive the Yuseong Hot Spring area, which was once a beloved destination for newlyweds, attracting over 20 million visitors annually in the 1970s and 1980s.

By next year, Daejeon City and Yuseong District will invest 26 billion KRW to develop a 48,247㎡ Hot Spring Cultural Park near the Gyeryong Spatel in Bongmyeong-dong as a new hot spring tourism hub.

The core of the hot spring tourism hub project includes the construction of a Hot Spring Cultural Experience Center and various hot spring tourism content projects. The Hot Spring Cultural Experience Center, with a total project cost of 19.85 billion KRW, will be built on a site at 574-5 Bongmyeong-dong, with one basement level and two above-ground floors. It will feature a multipurpose exhibition and performance hall, a travel information center, wellness therapy, and hot spring water experience spaces, all designed to restore the former glory of Yuseong Hot Springs. The hot spring tourism content project is currently in progress, focusing on developing an integrated brand for Yuseong Hot Springs, unique souvenirs, and programs to revitalize the hot spring district streets. A Yuseong District official stated that they plan to discover unique programs by the end of the year to ensure families can enjoy the hot springs year-round.

Mayor Jeong Yong-rae stated, “The Yuseong Hot Spring Travel Week will be a signal to restore the former glory of Yuseong Hot Springs,” and added, “We will continue to build tourism infrastructure that reflects the identity and characteristics of Yuseong.”
